Organized horse racing in the State of Kentucky started as far back as the late 1700s when quite a few different race courses were built in and around the city of Louisville. In 1872, Col. M. Lewis Clark, travel to England, visit the Epsom Derby, a well-known race that had been running yearly since 1780. From there, Clark went on to Paris, France, where in 1863 a group of race enthusiast had formed the French Jockey Club and had prearranged the Grand Prix de Paris, which finally became the famous Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Returning house to Kentucky, Clark prearranged the Louisville Jockey Club for the purpose of raise money to build excellence racing facilities just outside of the city. The track would soon turn into known as Churchill Downs, named for Lewis Clark's relatives, John and Henry Churchill, who had provided the land for the racetrack. Formally, the racetrack was included as Churchill Downs in 1937. The Kentucky Derby was primary run at 1˝ miles, the identical distance as the Epsom Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris. In 1896 the distance was distorted to its current 1Ľ miles. On May 17, 1875, in front of an predictable crowd of 10,000 people, a field of 15 three-year-old horses contest the first Derby. Under African-American jockey Oliver Lewis, a colt named Aristides who was taught by future Hall of Famer, Ansel Williamson, won the inaugural Derby. Later that year, Lewis rode Aristides to a second-place come to an end in the Belmont Stakes.
